Perry has the father of actors Laurie Metcalf, and Jeff Perry. On her role on the ABC sitcom Roseanne (in flashback) her mother starred as Jackie Harris in two of Perry's early TV appearances. She was not allowed to act from the time she reached old age, due to the anxiety it could cause. Perry stated she was nervous to be an actor in high school but began playing at Northwestern University as a way to meet new people after she transferred from Boston University. Perry was able to begin her acting career as an actress in New York after graduation, getting small roles on Law & Order: Criminal Intent. However, the feeling of homelessness made Perry return to California to pursue work as a theater actress. In 2013, she appeared in The Other Place on Broadway alongside her mother. Perry was in the show with her father Kevin McKidd and Eugene O'Neill's Pulitzer Prize winning drama Anna Christie in the year 2015 on The Odyssey Theatre Ensemble, West Los Angeles. In the year 2016, Perry appeared on nine episodes on ABC's drama The Family. She was also a regular actor for the ABC political drama Scandal which starred her father. The actress was also featured on her role on the CBS sitcom The Big Bang Theory spin-off Young Sheldon as a version younger Mary Cooper, Sheldon Cooper's mom. The role was given to her through audition, despite the fact that she was a cousin to the role.
